SS-Panzer-Abteilung 17 Götz von Berlichingen
Discover the detailed history of SS-Panzer-Abteilung 17 in the Battle of Normandy with this meticulously researched book. This tank battalion, part of the 17.SS-Panzergrenadier-Division ‘Götz von Berlichingen,’ is less well-known compared to other Waffen-SS armoured units active during the summer of 1944. Formed in late 1943, the battalion was almost entirely annihilated in the Roncey Pocket by July 1944, following just 6-7 weeks of operations.
SS-Panzer-Abteilung 17 was unique for mid-1944: a tank battalion equipped with assault guns, including the new Sturmgeschütz IV. This made it the only Waffen-SS unit in Normandy with such equipment. Despite a short training period, its young tankers excelled in anti-tank warfare, utilising Normandy’s hedgerows for effective camouflage. American GIs often remarked: “A Tiger or a Panther can be seen from afar, but a Sturmgeschütz is often spotted too late.”
However, the German crews faced high casualties and couldn’t withstand the overwhelming force of Operation Cobra. Of the ten machines that escaped the Roncey Pocket, only one reached Germany. The battalion also lost its commander in August 1944.
This book offers a comprehensive look at this little-known Panzer unit through rare photographs, unpublished documents, and illustrations by Felipe Rodna. It is an essential read for anyone interested in armoured warfare during the Battle of Normandy.
The book has a limited print run.
